Private AI writing.

Your unpublished manuscript is your most valuable creative asset. Most AI writing tools treat it like training data. We don't. Here's the full breakdown of what happens to your work when you use PlotForge — and the option to keep it entirely local.

PlotForge Web

  • • Manuscripts stored encrypted at rest in our PostgreSQL database
  • • Never used to train any AI model — ours, OpenAI's, Anthropic's, or anyone else's
  • • Staff access is tightly controlled and time-boxed
  • • AI generation routes through OpenAI / Anthropic with their no-training enterprise terms
  • • You can delete your account and all data permanently from settings

PlotForge Desktop

  • • Manuscripts stored in a local SQLite database on your machine
  • • Nothing leaves your computer — not even for AI generation
  • • AI runs locally via Ollama or LM Studio on your own hardware
  • • No internet required to write, draft, or use AI
  • • You own your files in the strictest possible sense

Why this is uncommon

The default for most AI writing tools is permissive: prompt and completion are retained for a window, often used to improve future models, sometimes shared with third-party providers. Read the privacy policies of the popular ones — the language is typically “may use submitted content to improve our services.”

For published authors, novelists under contract, or writers working with sensitive material, this is a real concern. Once your unpublished work is on someone else's server, it's on someone else's server.

PlotForge's position: the cloud option is privacy-first by enterprise terms; the desktop option is privacy-by-architecture. You shouldn't have to trust us — you should be able to verify.

What still leaves your machine, even on Desktop

To be honest: a few things, by design. None of them are your manuscript content.

  • License validation — periodic check that your license is still active. Includes order ID only, no content.
  • Update checks — version polling so you get bug fixes. Disable in Settings if you want manual updates.
  • Anonymous error reports — opt-in only, scrubbed of file paths and content snippets.

That's the full list. No telemetry on what you write, when you write, or what AI prompts you send. The local AI runner (Ollama or LM Studio) is its own process and we don't talk to it except to send prompts and receive completions.
